uab medicine logo websiteThe Medical Education Committee’s recent review of the Heersink School of Medicine Family Medicine Clerkship highlighted strong, outpatient clinical experiences across the Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa campuses. Clerkship objectives remain well aligned with Heersink School of Medicine goals and ACGME competencies.

Students praised the clerkship for its excellent patient exposure, engaged preceptors, and appropriate duty hours. Some variability persists in access to shared resources such as self‑study materials and alternative patient encounter options, although efforts are underway to standardize availability across all sites.

Students identified timely and constructive feedback, preceptor accessibility, meaningful autonomy, and diverse patient encounters as key strengths. Opportunities for improvement include expanding faculty development in assessment practices and standardizing the processes used to assign clinical honors and administer oral examinations across campuses.

Huntsville and Tuscaloosa continue to produce high numbers of students entering Family Medicine, likely reflecting the success of their targeted initiatives, including primary care tracks, rural training pathways, and integrated residency opportunities.

Further MEC updates will publish as they become available.
