The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority, operator of MAX Transit, is renewing its partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Equal Access Birmingham to help address transportation insecurity in the Birmingham area.
Through another donation of 750 bus passes from MAX Transit, Equal Access Birmingham will continue its Transportation Initiative, which helps patients and community members access healthcare and other essential resources at no cost.
Under the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, Equal Access Birmingham is a student-run free clinic that is committed to reducing healthcare disparities, fostering community partnerships, and training future healthcare leaders in service and advocacy.
For many EAB patients, transportation challenges can prevent them from attending medical appointments, filling prescriptions and receiving critical treatment. The initiative helps remove those barriers by providing reliable transportation to and from the clinic.
Over the past year, the program has helped patients access vital healthcare services and improve their quality of life. The initiative serves uninsured, underinsured and unhoused residents across the Greater Birmingham area.
EAB leaders expressed gratitude to the BJCTA team for its continued support, saying the donation will help expand access to safe, reliable transportation for community members who face the greatest transportation challenges.
