New federal legislation was passed last year that impacts federal financial aid for our current and incoming medical students. Most changes will be implemented on July 1, 2026, which is the beginning of the 2026-2027 academic year. Changes include new annual, aggregate, and lifetime limits to the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan; the discontinuation of the Graduate PLUS Loan Program; and new federal loan repayment plans. Limited exceptions (“Legacy Provisions”) may be available to current borrowers for a limited period.
Medical Student Financial Services has been working closely with current and prospective students to make them aware of the changes, including a dedicated legislative changes website, monthly newsletters, town halls, alternative education (private) loan website, and 1:1 meetings. Students are encouraged to reach out to Medical Student Financial Services to discuss their future financial aid eligibility or if they have any questions about the new legislation.
