matthew garron thumbnailMatthew Garron is a Help Desk Technician for Medical Education Informational Services, where he has served since June 2024. Prior to joining the MEIS team, he worked in the UAB Campus Bookstore. Garron was nominated to the 2025-2026 cohort of Medical Education Unsung Heroes by Adam Agee, director of Information Technology for the Heersink School of Medicine.

Garron provides essential support to the Department of Medical Education through hardware, software, AV, and network assistance. He is also tasked with monitoring classroom lecture operations to ensure an effective learning experience for students. He ensures lectures are recorded properly and resolves technical issues that may hinder student learning.

Garron is described by his peers as going above and beyond by actively looking for ways to improve processes or experiences for faculty and staff within the department. “He makes proactive rounds to check on users, often resolving needs before issues arise,” said Freddie Walker Jr., Information Systems Specialist. “I regularly receive positive feedback from our customers noting how he stops by simply to ensure everything is running smoothly.”

Walker also referenced Garron being quick on his feet. “We recently experienced a power issue in one of our lecture rooms, which affected the Audio and Video system. Through his quick thinking, Matthew found an alternate solution\location for the class and got the AV system set up and ready for the lecture with minimum downtime.”

Garron’s approachable and supportive attitude allows him to build strong relationships with both his co-workers in MEIS and broader throughout the department. He shares positivity and shows genuine interest in what’s going on with his colleagues. His willingness to share his knowledge and openness to collaborate on projects makes him a reliable member of the MEIS team.

When not at work, Garron enjoys exploring the city and spending time with friends and family. He also likes visiting local markets, hiking, and relaxing at home.
