Megyn Mielke is a program manager I for the Physician Scientist Development Office (PSDO), where she has served since late 2022. In her role, she oversees several key programs supporting medical students and undergraduate learners across the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Mielke was nominated to the 2025–2026 cohort of Medical Education Unsung Heroes by Stefanie B. Varghese, Ph.D., MBA, program director II for PSDO.
Mielke manages a broad portfolio of initiatives, including the Medical Student Summer Research Pathways (MSSRP), UAB Heersink School of Medicine Dale J. Benos Medical Student Research Day (MSRD), Scholarly Activity, undergraduate clinical observation, the Medical Student Travel Award (MSTA), and the Biomedical Poster Printing Service Center. Mielke also supports course planning and implementation across PSDO initiatives. “Megyn consistently goes above and beyond in her role,” Varghese said. “She rarely turns down a task and steps in to assist other departments, including helping onboard medical students for special projects.”
One of Mielke’s most significant contributions is her leadership of Scholarly Activity coordination for all Heersink School of Medicine medical students, a responsibility that requires exceptional organization and sustained attention to detail. She has also refined and strengthened the complex, schoolwide processes behind the MSSRP, helping ensure smooth and efficient operations each year. Varghese noted that the PSDO would not function at its current level without Mielke’s dedication, expertise, and commitment to excellence.
Mielke is known for fostering a welcoming and supportive environment. Her kindness and approachability naturally strengthen relationships across the team and contribute to a positive workplace culture.
Away from work, Mielke enjoys hiking, arts and crafts, watching movies, especially horror films, traveling, and spending time with her nieces.
