As UAB and Heersink School of Medicine continues to implement guidance around Title II compliance, we wanted to share useful resources with you as you create and deploy materials for students. The goal is for all digital materials to be accessible and Title II compliant, whether instructional, administrative or communicative.

In addition to the resources below, we will share guidance and best practices in future newsletter issues as we continue to bolster our efforts in this area.

General Campus Resources

UAB’s Digital Accessibility website serves as a hub for useful resources and procedural information as you create digital media (videos, graphics, PDFs, slide decks, forms, etc.). Tools for accessibility checking are also offered to ensure content meets standards needed for students using screen-readers or other assistive technology.

Accessible Coursework Resources

The Office of Learning Technologies offers a detailed breakdown for next steps regarding accessibility compliance in coursework. As Medical Education transitions to Canvas, many new accessibility options and checkers will become available to instructors, and the department will be sharing insight and support as we learn how to deploy those features effectively.

Accessibility Checkers in Microsoft tools

Microsoft tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook have built-in tools for checking accessibility. UAB’s digital accessibility website offers details on how to access and use these features with testing tools and checkers and document structure dedicated pages.

Thank you for your dedication to this initiative as we work to improve accessibility across our digital channels. Stay tuned for additional updates and helpful information.
