Two members of the research laboratory of Satoru Osuka, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery, presented award-winning research at the 30th Society for Neuro-Oncology Annual Meeting, held Nov. 20–23, 2025, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Opeyemi Iwaloye, a doctoral student, and Jun Takei, M.D., Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow, both presented their work during the meeting. Their abstracts received excellent evaluations and were selected for oral presentations, earning them the opportunity to present during a main scientific session.
Iwaloye’s research received additional recognition, earning the distinction of top basic science abstract submitted to this year’s meeting. He was awarded the Basic Science Award, one of the conference’s highest honors, recognizing the significance and impact of his work.
Research from the Osuka laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms that drive therapeutic resistance in malignant brain tumors, including glioblastoma, medulloblastoma and pediatric high-grade glioma. The lab’s work aims to advance treatment strategies for patients facing some of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.
The conference, which included the Society for Neuro-Oncology Education Day, was held in conjunction with the 7th Quadrennial Meeting of the World Federation of Neuro-Oncology Societies and brought together leading scientists and clinicians from around the world.
The Society for Neuro-Oncology Annual Meeting is one of the field’s premier scientific gatherings, highlighting emerging research and fostering collaboration among neuro-oncology professionals worldwide.
