James Johnston, M.D., professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery, discussed the evolution of the department's Global Neurosurgery Program at the Society of Neurological Surgeons 2026 Annual Meeting.
During his presentation, “Growing a Global Neurosurgery Program,” Johnston shared the important role academic institutions can play in strengthening neurosurgical education, training and infrastructure worldwide.
Johnston highlighted several longstanding partnerships established by UAB Neurosurgery, including collaborations with hospitals in Vietnam, Ghana and Cairo. He noted that these partnerships demonstrate the benefits of establishing structured and sustainable frameworks for collaborative global neurosurgery efforts.
According to Johnston, the program’s goals extend beyond surgical visits and include education, advocacy, research, virtual mentoring and the development of neurosurgical training programs in partner countries.
He also discussed the program’s growing educational initiatives, including a global surgery journal club, visiting professor program, graduate-level global surgery coursework and a structured curriculum for residents and fellows interested in global neurosurgery.
Johnston highlighted the department’s use of virtual technology to support international partners by allowing UAB faculty to provide ongoing mentorship and training across multiple countries.
Johnston concluded by encouraging institutions interested in global neurosurgery to prioritize collaboration, flexibility and long-term partnership development.
