Hospitals nationwide recognize the dedication, resilience and impact of resident physicians each year on Thank a Resident Day, observed Feb. 27. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery, that appreciation runs deep.

UAB neurosurgery residents are at the forefront of patient care, balancing the demands of a rigorous seven-year training program with compassion, precision, and a commitment to excellence. As they assume increasing responsibility in caring for complex neurosurgical patients, they serve as essential members of the clinical team, providing high-quality care around the clock.

Beyond the operating room, residents contribute to research, innovation and national academic conversations. They present at major meetings, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Society of Neurological Surgeons, representing UAB nationally. Interns accelerate their development through the Society of Neurological Surgeons’ Boot Camp Courses, building foundational skills for their surgical careers.

Camaraderie also defines the program. UAB neurosurgery residents support each other through the intensity of training, forming lasting friendships and a culture of respect and teamwork. Whether competing in the Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament in Central Park or traveling to national meetings, they exemplify professional dedication and community spirit.

The department’s 2026 chief residents, Benjamin Saccomano, Matthew Parr and Yasaman Alam, reflect the leadership and commitment that define the program. As mentors to junior residents and trusted physicians for their patients, they represent years of hard work and growth.

On Thank a Resident Day, UAB Neurosurgery celebrates its residents for their extraordinary effort, sacrifice and compassion. Their dedication strengthens the department, advances patient care and helps shape the future of neurosurgery.
