Prior to joining the Department of Neurosurgery, Holland attended Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed his neurosurgical residency training at the University of Iowa. He then completed fellowships in stereotactic and functional movement disorders at the University of Florida Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases and the Oregon Health & Science University Department of Neurological Surgery.

Holland specializes in functional neurosurgery, treating a variety of neurological syndromes, such as epilepsy, movement disorders, facial pain and trigeminal neuralgia. While at UAB, Holland has continued his research interest in deep brain stimulation (DBS) for restless leg syndrome (RLS) and autonomic nervous system modulation. Alongside his research into spinal cord stimulation for RLS, he has also demonstrated a commitment to improving patient care in his field. In 2021, he conceptualized UAB’s Multidisciplinary Overnight Evaluation (MoVE) with Department of Neurosurgery Associate Professor Nicole Bentley, M.D., which offers movement disorder patients a more efficient route to DBS surgery evaluation.

As an associate professor, Holland will continue his clinical practice while innovating research in functional neurosurgery.
