Mark Johnson, M.D., and Katharine Weintraub, M.D.The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is pleased to announce the selection of Mark Johnson, M.D., and Katharine Weintraub, M.D., as chief residents for the 2026–2027 academic year. Chosen by their peers, they will serve in this leadership role during their final year of residency training.
The chief resident role is a distinguished honor within the department, recognizing leadership, collaboration and a commitment to excellence in patient care and education. Chief residents serve as liaisons between residents and faculty while helping support and strengthen the residency program.
Johnson reflected on his appointment, saying, “It is an honor to be elected by my fellow residents to serve the residency as chief alongside Dr. Weintraub. The program has had some amazing chiefs over the years, and we have big shoes to fill. We’re going to have a fantastic year working with our faculty and new program director, Dr. Tim Johnson, to take what is already an outstanding program to the next level.”
Weintraub also shared her perspective on the role. “I am deeply honored to have been selected by my peers to serve as chief resident for the upcoming academic year. It is a privilege to be part of such an exceptional program, surrounded and supported by so many wonderful and talented people. As chief resident, I hope to pay this forward by being a source of support and an advocate for current residents. I also hope to contribute to the continued growth of this amazing program through collaborative efforts with the residents, program leadership, and faculty.”
As they step into their roles, Johnson and Weintraub will work closely with faculty and program leadership to support their fellow residents and contribute to the continued growth and success of the residency program. Their leadership will help advance the department’s mission of training the next generation of ophthalmologists.
