Erik Kouba

The Department of Pathology is thrilled to announce a new faculty member joining our team, effective March 31.

Erik Kouba, M.D., joins the Community Practice Pathology Program (CPPP) as a full-time clinical professor. He will cover service at UAB Medical West in Bessemer. Kouba comes to the department from Cytopath PC, where he served as a staff pathologist for several Birmingham area hospitals including UAB Medical West and UAB St. Vincent’s since 2023. Prior to this, he worked as a staff pathologist for Associated Pathologists at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, now known as Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center, for nearly five years.

Kouba earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007, during which he completed a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship. He completed his residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at UAB in 2015, following a urological surgery residency at Stanford University Medical Center in 2011. Kouba completed a fellowship in genitourinary pathology at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, and cytopathology and surgical pathology fellowships at UAB. Before medical school, Kouba worked for four years as a chemical engineer.

Kouba has authored more than 51 peer‑reviewed manuscripts and abstracts and has given numerous presentations. He is affiliated with several professional societies, including the College of American Pathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathology, American Medical Association, the American Society of Cytopathology and the International Society of Urological Pathology. Kouba is the holder of several patents related to the manufacture of pyrodextrins.
