ding_yanna.jpgThe Department of Pathology is pleased to announce a new faculty member joining our team, effective January 15.

Yanna Ding, M.D., Ph.D., is joining the Division of Laboratory Medicine as an assistant professor. Ding joins us from the University of Washington where she served as an assistant professor and a hematopathologist since 2024.

Ding earned her medical degree from Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, in Changsha, China, in 2004. She completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2022. Following her residency, Ding completed a two-year fellowship in hematopathology at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2024.

After receiving her medical degree, Ding completed a Master of Science in Pathology from Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-Sen University, in Guangzhou, China, in 2007. She completed her Ph.D. in Pathology and Immunology in the laboratory of John Mountz, M.D., Ph.D. in the UAB Department of Medicine in 2013. Ding shadowed Shi Wei, M.D., Ph.D., Hazel Gore, M.B.B.S., Endowed Professor in Women's Health, Division Director, Division of Women’s Health, UAB Department of Pathology, and Rong Li, M.D., Ph.D. a pathologist at Children’s of Alabama, for anatomic pathology in 2017.

Since 2018, Ding has taught anatomic pathology, flow cytometry and hematopathology to medical students, residents and fellows. She has authored 18 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and given numerous presentations. She currently serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Neuropathology and Journal of Infection and Chemotherapy and as an editorial board member for Journal of Clinical Pathology. She is affiliated with several professional societies, including the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and Chinese American Pathologists Association. Ding serves on the Education Committee for the International Clinical Cytometry Society.

In 2024, Ding published an educational app, Molecular Dictionary, a free software that aims to provide an instant search for basic information in molecular genetics findings for each entity in pathology.
