The Department of Pathology is thrilled to welcome three new faculty members, effective July 1. Gopal Kumar, M.D., joins the Division of Anatomic Pathology as an assistant professor, Song Lu, Ph.D., MLS(ASCP)CM, DABCC, FCACB joins the Division of Laboratory Medicine as an assistant professor, and Meghan White, M.D., joins the Division of Women’s Health as an assistant professor.

Gopal KumarGopal Kumar, M.D.Dr. Gopal Kumar is a recent surgical pathology fellow in the UAB Department of Pathology. He earned his medical degree from the University College of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India in 2014. He completed 4 years of residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at the MetroHealth System/Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 2025. Upon completion of residency, Kumar joined UAB to complete a surgical pathology instructor/fellowship in genitourinary pathology.

Kumar has authored 13 publications and given 4 poster presentations at national conferences. He is part of the College of American Pathology and American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Song Lu comes to UAB from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada where he served as an assistant professor in the College of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and from the Saskatchewan Health Authority, where he served as a clinical biochemist, both since 2024.Lu SongSong Lu, Ph.D., MLS(ASCP)CM, DABCC, FCACB

Lu earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from The University of Hong Kong in 2011. He earned two bachelor’s degrees, one in Microbiology and Immunology from McGill University in Quebec, Canada, in 2006 and another in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle in 2020. Lu has completed postdoctoral fellowships at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Washington.

Lu served as a medical laboratory scientist at Seattle Cancer Center Alliance in 2021 and completed clinical chemistry fellowship at The Pennsylvania State University in 2023. He gained extensive teaching experience within the clinical biochemistry fellowship program and pathology residency program at the University of Saskatchewan and has authored nearly 20 manuscripts. Lu has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry since 2023 and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry since 2026, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Association of Medical Laboratory Immunologists, Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists, Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

Meghan WhiteMeghan White, M.D.Dr. Meghan White is a recent women’s health fellow in the UAB Department of Pathology. She earned her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2017. After medical school, she briefly trained as an obstetrics and gynecology resident before beginning her pathology career in 2021.

White completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency in 2025 at the University of Missouri School of Medicine where she served as chief resident from 2023 to 2024. After residency, White joined UAB to complete an instructor/fellowship in women’s health.

White has authored 2 publications, given 4 poster presentations at national meetings, and presented numerous educational presentations during her residency training. She is affiliated with several professional societies, including the College of American Pathologists, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
