The UAB Department of Pathology recently funded a travel award to Joshua Kramer, Ph.D., who presented his research at the 2026 Masoro-Barshop Conference on Aging, October 8–11 in Bandera, Texas.

KramerKramer, who is a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Jianhua Zhang, Ph.D., was selected to give an oral presentation on October 10, titled, "Beyond Cardiomyocytes: Pressure Overload Reveals a Spatially Organized Multicellular Mitochondrial Quality-Control Response in the Heart." The project examines how different cell populations in the heart respond to pressure overload by changing mitochondrial quality control.

"This is relevant to aging because increased arterial stiffness and hypertension raise left ventricular workload, while the heart’s ability to maintain mitochondrial quality and adapt to stress becomes increasingly important with age," Kramer said. "Our model lets us study the early mitochondrial response to increased cardiac afterload before more advanced remodeling develops."

Kramer found that the response is not limited to cardiomyocytes. Cardiomyocytes account for the largest overall mitophagy burden, but endothelial cells show one of the strongest proportional increases during early pressure overload. This suggests the heart is driving a coordinated, multicellular mitochondrial stress response rather than a cardiomyocyte-only response.

"Longer term, understanding which cardiac cell populations are able to activate mitochondrial quality-control pathways, and which eventually lose that ability with age or disease, could help identify more targeted ways to preserve cardiac resilience and potentially slow the transition from stress adaptation to maladaptive remodeling and heart failure."
