For more than 23 years, Karen Brooks has played an important role behind the scenes in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Pediatrics. As administrative supervisor in Pediatrics Administration-Human Resources, Brooks helps support faculty and staff through a variety of human resources responsibilities that keep the department running smoothly.
Brooks says the people she has worked alongside throughout her career have made her time at UAB especially meaningful.
“The people have made the difference,” said Brooks. “I’ve had the privilege of working with dedicated colleagues, building lasting relationships and growing both personally and professionally throughout my career.”
Each day brings new priorities and opportunities to support the department. Brooks serves as the department’s HSF employment representative, Department of Pediatrics leave coordinator and human resources contact for the Fellowship Program while also managing special projects as needed.
“I start each day with a to-do list, but most days don’t go as planned,” explained Brooks. “New priorities often arise, which keeps every day interesting and requires flexibility and organization. I enjoy the variety each day brings and the opportunity to support our faculty and staff.”
After more than two decades with the department, Brooks says what continues to motivate her is knowing her work contributes to the department’s larger mission.
“What I enjoy most is knowing that my work matters,” shared Brooks. “I find it fulfilling to support our faculty and staff while working alongside such a dedicated team. After more than 23 years with the Department of Pediatrics, it is still rewarding to know that, even behind the scenes, I am one piece of the puzzle helping others make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families.”
Outside of work, Brooks enjoys scrapbooking, journaling and spending time with her family. When she is looking for a great meal, she recommends Cajun Steamer and Half Shell Oyster House for seafood.
Through her dedication, flexibility and commitment to supporting others, Brooks continues to make a lasting impact on the faculty, staff and programs that help the Department of Pediatrics fulfill its mission every day.
