aap commitee harris webWilliam Harris, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Pediatrics, has been elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine.

This national appointment recognizes Harris’ leadership and commitment to advancing pediatric respiratory health. In this role, he will collaborate with experts across the country to help shape policies, priorities and standards that guide the care of children with pulmonary and sleep-related conditions.

“This role allows me to increase my impact on the quality of pediatric respiratory health,” said Harris. “The AAP is a leader in promoting pediatric health and policy positions, and I am excited about the opportunity to help frame those statements to improve respiratory health for children.”

As a member of the executive committee, Harris will help establish policy priorities, statements and standards related to pediatric pulmonary care while working with national leaders to advance evidence-based practices.

The position closely aligns with Harris’ professional mission. “My overall mission is to optimize pediatric respiratory health, and this role allows me to influence caregiving standards and priorities,” Harris explained. “It provides a broad platform to emphasize care priorities and goals that can meaningfully impact child respiratory health.”

Through his service, Harris aims to promote policies and initiatives that enhance the respiratory health of all children, reflecting the department’s commitment to advancing pediatric care through innovation, collaboration and service.
