The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Pediatrics 
is pleased to announce leadership changes within the Division of Pediatric Critical Care effective May 1, 2026.

After 30 years of service, Mark Buckmaster, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, is retiring from the department. Vidit Bhargava, M.D., will succeed Buckmaster in the role of Division medical director of Simon Sedation.

With the 12th floor Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) expansion at Children’s of Alabama, Jeremy Loberger, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, will serve as Division medical director of Critical Care Medicine Quality and Nancy Tofil, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, will become Interim Children’s of Alabamaco-medical director of the PICU. Paul Scalici, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, will continue his role as Children’s of Alabama co-medical director of the PICU.

We are excited for these changes and welcome these physicians into their new leadership roles!
