The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Children’s of Alabama have been named a Team Telomere Center of Excellence for Telomere Biology Disorders (TBDs). The designation recognizes the institutions’ commitment to providing comprehensive, coordinated care while advancing research, education, collaboration and advocacy for patients and families affected by these rare conditions.
Chibuzo Ilonze, M.D., MPH, FAAPThe multidisciplinary program will provide specialized care for patients across the lifespan. Chibuzo Ilonze, M.D., MPH, FAAP, assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology will lead care for pediatric and adolescent patients, while Pongtawat Lertwilaiwittaya, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Genetics will lead care for adult patients. This collaborative approach will help provide continuity of care as patients transition from childhood and adolescence into adulthood.
Telomere Biology Disorders are a group of inherited conditions caused by abnormalities in telomere maintenance. These disorders can affect multiple organ systems and may lead to complications including bone marrow failure, pulmonary and liver disease, immune dysfunction and an increased risk of cancer. Because of their complexity, patients often benefit from coordinated care involving specialists across multiple disciplines.
Pongtawat Lertwilaiwittaya, M.D.As a Center of Excellence, UAB and Children’s of Alabama will provide comprehensive patient care guided by established TBD diagnosis and management guidelines. The program will also provide education for patients, families, health care professionals and referring centers while collaborating with other Centers of Excellence across the country. Patients and families will also have access to Team Telomere’s educational, support, advocacy and research resources.
The designation further strengthens UAB and Children’s of Alabama as a regional resource for individuals with suspected or confirmed Telomere Biology Disorders, including patients who may otherwise have to travel significant distances to receive specialized multidisciplinary care.
Through participation in the Center of Excellence network, UAB and Children’s of Alabama will also have opportunities to collaborate with TBD experts nationwide, contribute to research and educational initiatives and share best practices aimed at improving outcomes for individuals living with these rare disorders.
