Mark Lockhart, M.D., MPH, professor in the UAB Department of Radiology, has been appointed to the rank of Distinguished Professor in the Department of Radiology. This prestigious designation recognizes his extraordinary contributions to academic medicine, clinical excellence, leadership, and service over more than two decades at UAB.

This honor is a highly deserved recognition of his accomplishments and the professional integrity that defines his career.”
Lockhart’s career reflects a deep and sustained commitment to the Heersink School of Medicine and the Department of Radiology. A nationally and internationally respected radiologist, educator, and scholar, he has played an integral role in shaping the department’s clinical missions, educational programs, and national reputation.
Lockhart earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mississippi in 1991 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Emory University School of Medicine in 1995. He completed his residency training in diagnostic radiology at UAB, followed by a clinical fellowship in abdominal imaging in the Department of Radiology. Demonstrating an early commitment to population health and outcomes-based care, he later earned a Master of Public Health from UAB in 2002.
Since joining UAB in 2000 as an instructor in the abdominal imaging section, Lockhart has advanced steadily through the academic ranks, achieving tenure and promotion to professor in 2010. Throughout this time, he has held numerous leadership roles within the department, including director of the Abdominal Imaging Fellowship, director and associate director of Radiology Medical Student Education, chief of Genitourinary Radiology, and section chief for Body Imaging. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing clinical quality, educational innovation, and faculty development.
Lockhart has also made significant contributions to faculty governance at UAB, serving multiple terms in the Faculty Senate, including senate chair. Within the Department of Radiology, he has been a long-standing member of the Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure Committee and has served as its chair since 2017, helping guide faculty advancement and uphold standards of academic excellence.
At the national level, Lockhart is widely recognized for his leadership in professional organizations. He has served on the board of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, chaired the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Committee, and currently serves on the executive committee of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, where he served as president in 2025. He is also chair of the American Board of Radiology Ultrasound Certifying Committee, reflecting his influence on radiology education and standards nationwide.
A prolific scholar, Lockhart has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, cited over 8,300 times, and has delivered dozens of invited lectures and presentations at national and international meetings. He is editor and author of Diagnostic Ultrasound: Vascular, now in its second edition, and has contributed extensively to textbooks, clinical guidelines, editorials, and abstracts that shape modern radiology practice.
Lockhart’s academic impact extends beyond authorship. He has served as a visiting professor at 15 institutions, mentored countless trainees at every level, and has been a funded investigator on extramural research grants from the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. He was a long-standing investigator in the NICHD Pelvic Floor Disorders Network for nearly two decades.
In addition, his dedication to teaching has been consistently recognized, including multiple departmental Top 10 Teacher awards, the Gary T. Barnes Distinguished Faculty Award for Instructional Excellence, and the Chicago Deep Dish Radiology Resident Teaching Award.
