
The UAB Heersink School of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Mahmud Mossa-Basha, M.D., as the fourth holder of the prestigious Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair in the Department of Radiology. This appointment was formally approved by the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama in February 2026.
The Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology was established in 1997 and renamed in 2002 to recognize sustained excellence in academic radiology, supporting outstanding leadership, clinical care, research, and education in the field.

Mossa-Basha joined UAB in 2025 as professor and chair of the Department of Radiology. An internationally recognized authority in stroke, neurovascular, and neurological imaging, he brings extensive expertise in clinical care, research, education, and academic leadership to THE UAB Department of Radiology. His selection as the fourth holder of this endowed chair reflects his distinguished accomplishments and vision for the future.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Michigan in 2000, his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toledo College of Medicine in 2005, And his transitional year and diagnostic radiology residency in 2010 at Henry Ford Hospital. He then completed a two-year diagnostic neuroradiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2012. He advanced in academic, research, and clinical roles over the next 13 years, most of which were spent at the University of Washington-Seattle, before joining UAB.
Mossa-Basha has demonstrated a strong commitment to education and mentorship, serving as a mentor for medical and Ph.D. students, residents, fellows, and junior and mid-career faculty. He has received multiple teaching awards throughout his career, including honors from the American Society of Neuroradiology, and The Radiological Society of North America in addition to institutional teaching and mentorship awards.
In addition to his clinical and educational leadership, Mossa-Basha is actively engaged in the radiology professional community. He has taken leadership roles in multiple societies, including serving on the RSNA Board of Trustees and the Research Development Committee, being elected to the ASNR Nominating Committee, chairing the Society of Magnetic Resonance Angiography Education Committee, and serving on the ACR Neurocommission. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, edited multiple books, and serves or has served as Senior Editor for AJNR and British Journal of Radiology. He has served as PI on 4 NIH and multiple societal and industry grants during his career, and has won multiple research awards, including the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy of Radiological Sciences.
The appointment of Mossa-Basha as the fourth holder of the Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology underscores his outstanding record of achievement and leadership. His vision aligns with the mission of the Heersink School of Medicine to advance patient care, research discovery, and medical education.
