UAB Department of Surgery residents swept the awards for residency competitions at the annual Alabama/Mississippi Chapters of the American College of Surgeons Annual Meeting, held July 30 - August 1, 2026, at The Lodge at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The results underscore the strength of the research training within the UAB General Surgery Residency Program, where residents have the opportunity to pair clinical work with mentored research.
In the resident paper competition, the winners were:
- First place: Meredith Johnson, M.D.
- Second place: Marcus Sirianno, M.D.
- Third place: Rachelle Alexander, M.D.
“I could not be prouder of our residents. These accomplishments reflects the quality of their research, the hours they put in, and the mentorship they receive from our faculty,” said UAB General Surgery Program Director Britney Corey, M.D., MACM. “Seeing our trainees recognized alongside their peers across Alabama and Mississippi tells me the research support structure we've built is doing exactly what we hoped.”
About the ACS Alabama/Mississippi Joint Meeting
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons founded in 1913 to improve the quality of surgical care and set standards for surgical education and practice. It is the largest organization of surgeons in the world, with members across virtually every surgical specialty, and works to advance patient care through education, research, and professional standards. The Alabama and Mississippi Chapters are state affiliates of the College. Each year they host a joint annual meeting that brings surgeons, residents, and trainees from both states together for scientific sessions, continuing education, and networking.
