Medical student Hana Habchi has been awarded the 2022 Sara Crews M.D., Endowed Leadership Scholarship, which provides full tuition for the third year of medical school and is renewable for the fourth year. It recognizes excellence in academics, service, and leadership.

Because of the generosity of volunteers, the Community Free Clinic of Huntsville improves health care access and health of underserved communities. UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s faculty, trainees, and students join hands to serve underprivileged communities in Huntsville.

In the last feature of our 2022 Pride Month series, the Department of Medicine has collaborated with the Heersink Office for Diversity and Inclusion to shine a light on how the school is working to expand the perspectives of its medical students through the Health Equity Scholars (HES) program.

CEO and Dean Selwyn M. Mona Fouad, M.D., senior associate dean of Diversity and Inclusion, joined UAB's Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as associate vice president on July 1. She will maintain her role as senior associate dean while also serving as the associate vice president.

For Juneteenth 2022, the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion put together a brief overview of the 157-year-old holiday and lists several ways to celebrate, including cooking traditional Juneteenth recipes, cultivating a reading list, and engaging in local activities.

Frances Lund, Ph.D., founding director of the Immunology Institute and professor in the Department of Microbiology, is donating her transition party funds to the Blazer Kitchen.
