Originally from Union Springs, Alabama, Austin has built an 18‑year career at UAB that began as a temporary position and grew into a meaningful professional journey across both campus and clinical environments.

“Working with the Department of Urology has pushed me beyond my comfort zone, fostering continuous learning and motivating me to develop professionally and personally,” Austin shared.

Throughout her career, Austin has remained driven by personal inspiration, professional development, and a desire to build a strong foundation for the future. She shares what motivates her, how her childhood aspirations shaped her outlook, and why she continues to value her time at UAB.

Who or what inspires you in your personal life?

Austin: My son has been and continues to be my greatest source of inspiration. He motivates me to strive each day to become the best version of myself, so that I can provide him with opportunities that were not available to me growing up. Equally motivating is my vision for the future. I work diligently now with the goal of building a life that allows for balance, fulfillment, and the ability to enjoy time and experiences later in life.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?

Austin: When I was younger, I aspired to become a lawyer, inspired by Claire Huxtable, who was my role model. She exemplified intelligence, confidence, and balance while maintaining a beautiful and loving family. I admired the professionalism, authority, and presence she carried. That appreciation for strong, stylish leadership has stayed with me. Suits remains one of my favorite shows, particularly because of the way Jessica Pearson embodies confidence, power, and impeccable professional style.

How long have you been with UAB, and why do you enjoy it?

Austin: I have been with UAB for 18 years, having begun my career as a temporary employee in the Student Accounting department. At the time, I never imagined that this opportunity would evolve into such a long‑standing and meaningful career. Over the years, I have had the privilege of earning both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration, with a concentration in human resources, while continuing to grow professionally within the institution. My experience spans across both the campus and clinical environments, providing me with a broad perspective on UAB’s operations. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to UAB’s missions of academic excellence, high‑quality patient care, and the advancement of research.
