Andrew Fang, M.D., joined the Department of Urology as an assistant professor in September 2025. He earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and neurobiology at the University of Texas at Austin and his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Houston McGovern Medical School.
After completing his urology residency at UAB, Fang completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. However, he and his wife enjoyed living in Birmingham during residency, so rejoining the UAB family was an easy decision.
Learn more about Dr. Fang’s expertise and his hopes for his role at UAB.
What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
Fang: I really enjoyed the broad practice of urology where one could go from endoscopic surgery to robotic surgery and even large open procedures.
What is your primary area of expertise within your field, and what sparked your passion for it?
Fang: As a urologic oncologist, I treat patients with cancers of the kidneys, prostate, and bladder. However, my mentors inspired my research in prostate cancer. While prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies, it has a very wide range of behaviors. Better determining the treatment strategy for each patient has been a major area of interest for me.
What aspects of your new role are you most excited about?
Fang: The opportunity to train and inspire the next generation of doctors and urologic surgeons is definitely one of the most exciting aspects of joining the department. UAB offers many opportunities to get involved in the educational process.
What are your goals for making an impact through patient care in this role?
Fang: I hope to provide excellent oncologic for patients in Alabama and throughout the region. Urologic oncology is a rapidly growing field, and I want to bring the latest treatment options and techniques to my patients.
