Karishma Gupta, M.D., joined the Department of Urology as an assistant professor in September 2025. She completed her undergraduate and doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and worked at Grandview Medical Center and Urology Centers for Alabama prior to joining UAB St. Vincent’s.

Learn more about her journey and what inspires her work.

What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

Gupta: The field of urology integrates many aspects of medicine that I enjoy: diversity of surgical interventions, research, technological advancement and innovation, examining sensitive issues with patients, and the opportunity to establish long-term relationships.

What is your primary area of expertise within your field, and what sparked your passion for it?

Gupta: My primary area of expertise is general urology, with a broad clinical focus that includes benign prostatic disease, stone disease, hematuria evaluation, men’s health, and common urologic malignancies. I value the role of the general urologist as the first point of contact for most urologic conditions and take pride in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care across a wide spectrum of disease.

My passion for general urology was sparked by the diversity of pathology and the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients. I enjoy the balance of medical and surgical management, problem-solving across different organ systems, and the ability to make meaningful improvements in patients’ quality of life through both procedural and longitudinal care.

What aspects of your new role are you most excited about?

Gupta: I am very excited about the Division of Academic Community Urology. My entrance into the medical field began with community service, and the opportunity to develop this division feels like I’m coming full circle. I’m excited to practice at the intersection of the academic mission (teaching, research, and evidence-based practice) and community-focused patient care.

What are your goals for making an impact through both your teaching and patient care in this role?

Gupta: In an academic community urology setting, my goal is to deliver high-quality, evidence-based urologic care that is accessible and responsive to the needs of the community, while serving as a reliable clinical and educational resource. From a teaching perspective, I hope to create an opportunity for students and residents to experience the full scope of community-based urology, emphasizing practical clinical decision-making, efficient workflows, collaboration with tertiary subspecialists, and patient-centered care. Ultimately, I see this role as an opportunity to bridge academic standards with real-world practice, benefiting both patients and trainees.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Gupta: I am excited to contribute to a collaborative clinical and educational environment. I value teamwork, continuous improvement, and mentorship, and I am motivated to grow alongside the department while supporting its clinical, teaching, and service missions.
