The UAB Department of Urology has recently expanded its comprehensive urologic and fertility care services at UAB Medicine Hoover Primary & Specialty Care, offering patients evaluation and treatment for a wide range of conditions, including men’s health, prostate and urinary concerns, cancer, and family planning. The location also brings male and female infertility services together, giving couples access to coordinated fertility care in one setting.

Comprehensive fertility care for couples
For couples experiencing infertility, care often involves both partners and requires multiple appointments and tests. At UAB Medicine Hoover, fertility consultations and follow-up visits are available for couples seeking evaluation and treatment.
“This reinforces our philosophy to provide a thorough and comprehensive evaluation and treatment for couples with infertility,” Kolettis said. “It allows improved access for these couples and facilitates providing this care.”
The location also has an on-site Andrology Lab, where semen analysis testing can be performed as part of a male fertility evaluation. The initial consultation can often be conducted via telehealth, allowing the physician to gather medical and fertility history and determine which tests may be needed. Patients can then complete in-person evaluations and follow-up visits at the Hoover location, where the evaluation may include a physical examination to identify potential causes of infertility.
“Having the Andrology Lab on site will hopefully make this comprehensive evaluation easier and less stressful for the couple,” Kolettis said.
Kolettis said the shared location is another beneficial part of the experience for couples undergoing infertility evaluation and treatment.
“This arrangement offers the opportunity for increased flexibility for couples,” Kolettis said. “The ease with which the couple can navigate this facility hopefully will reduce the couple’s stress as they proceed through evaluation and treatment.”
More than fertility care
While fertility services are an important part of the care available at UAB Medicine Hoover, patients can also receive evaluation for other urologic concerns. Diagnostic services at the location include ultrasound and blood testing for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which can help evaluate prostate health.
Hyatt describes the scope of care available at the Hoover location:
“Hoover offers diagnosis and treatment for any urological conditions: men’s health, cancer treatment, urinary incontinence, prostate conditions, and family planning services,” Hyatt said.
For patients coming to Hoover for the first time, the visit provides an opportunity to discuss their concerns and understand the next steps in their care.
“Walk in, be seen on time, get a complete explanation of the treatment plan, have your questions answered,” Hyatt said.
The Hoover location is accessible from major roadways and offers patient-friendly parking.
“Ease of access, on-time visits, and a less-stressed atmosphere are the biggest complements,” Hyatt said.
Kolettis said the location’s accessibility can help address some of the practical challenges patients may face when seeking specialty care.
“Having this service available here can hopefully reduce travel and other barriers to receiving care,” Kolettis said.
