Expanding the health disparities research pipeline

The OHDRC works to expand the knowledge base of obesity related health disparities research, stimulate research activities and collaboration, and increase the critical mass of independent investigators.

The Obesity Health Disparities Research Education Program supports early stage investigators or mid-level faculty who are new to research or who want to transition to disparities research. Scholars are selected through a competitive process each summer, with new cohorts starting in September. Scholars are linked with a research mentor who helps them to develop a competitive grant proposal in their field of research. Scholars also join faculty discussions and take courses on bioethics, biostatistics, epidemiology, and minority aging.

Grant writing retreat preps for success

During an intensive grant writing retreat, participants identify a potential funding opportunity, develop a research idea, and prepare their research aims, methods, and budget. Scholars present their proposal to a panel of seasoned health disparities investigators who give direct and honest feedback. Following the retreat, most scholars are prepared to submit their proposal to an external funding agency.

Building a foundation of obesity-related health disparities research

After successful completion of the program, scholars have a sound understanding of the fundamentals of obesity-related health disparities research and earn an Obesity Health Disparities Research Education Certificate. For more information, contact Ann Smith, annsmith@uab.edu.
