Program Goal
To provide quality and comprehensive training in all aspects of women’s reproductive health and family planning, as required of a Ryan Residency Training Program.
Objectives
PGY1
- Early pregnancy assessment, ultrasound, and dating
- Pregnancy options counseling
- Miscarriage management options - expectant, medical, and surgical management, including manual and electronic vacuum aspiration
- Anesthesia options for uterine aspiration procedures, including placement of paracervical block
- Patient-centered and evidence-based contraceptive counseling, including post-partum and post-abortion contraception
- Contraceptive options, counseling and long acting reversible contraception insertion techniques
- Abnormal early pregnancy evaluation and management, including pregnancy of unknown location and ectopic pregnancy
PGY2
- Early pregnancy ultrasound and dating
- Proficiency in medication abortion provision and determination of appropriate candidates, counseling and regimens
- Competence in first trimester abortion procedures
- Increased skills in second trimester abortion procedures, such as dilation and evacuation
- Cervical ripening and dilation techniques
- Anesthesia options for uterine aspiration procedures, including placement of paracervical block
- Diagnosis and management of abortion complications
- Induction termination techniques, risks, and benefits
- Post-abortion contraceptive options
PGY3
- Knowledge of the full range of contraceptive options
- Mechanisms of action and efficacy of different contraceptive methods
- Use of the US Medical Eligibility Criteria to evaluate eligibility for the use of contraceptives among women with specific medical conditions or characteristics
- Use of the US Selected Practice Recommendations for initiation of contraception and management of common problems
- Patient-centered and evidence-based contraceptive counseling
- Risks associated with different contraceptive methods in the setting of various medical conditions
