Program Goal

The goals of the course are to:

  1. Develop the OBGYN resident’s knowledge of basic laparoscopic skills.
  2. Teach them the essentials of core equipment used in laparoscopic gynecologic surgery.
  3. Impact on the residents’ clinical practice.

Objectives 

The program objectives for this course consist are:

  • To provide residents with a two-day review course on laparoscopy. 
  • To prepare residents for OBGYN written and oral boards concerning gynecologic anatomy, laparoscopic equipment, energy sources, and complications. 
  • To introduce the resident to the core laparoscopy equipment at UAB.  
  • To provide residents the training to troubleshoot in the OR.

By the end of the course, residents will be able to:

  1. Identify the key abdominal and pelvic anatomy, which is critical to safe laparoscopic surgery.
  2. Setup and troubleshoot the basic laparoscopic equipment including insufflation, light source, laparoscopes, and video imaging.
  3. Identify the different types of trocars and describe the advantages/disadvantages of each type.
  4. Explain the basic laparoscopic instruments including probes, graspers, suction/irrigators, scissors, and endobag.

Energy Sources
By the end of the course, residents will be able to:

  1. Explain the different types of energy sources and discuss the advantages/disadvantages of bipolar cautery versus monopolar cautery.
  2. Describe the differences between Gyrus, Ligasure, and Harmonic technology.

Advanced Laparoscopy
By the end of the course, residents will be able to:

  1. Describe the indications for and types of minimally invasive hysterectomy including LATVH, TLH, LASH, and robotic hysterectomy.
  2. Discuss the special instruments needed for a TLH.

Complications of Laparoscopy
By the end of the course, residents will be able to:

  1. Describe the major complications of laparoscopic surgery.
  2. Discuss the management of laparoscopic complications.
