Program Goal 

This curriculum is a preparatory program for PGY1 residents to develop their knowledge of and skills in basic surgical procedures used in obstetrics and gynecology. 

Objectives 

At the completion of training, the first-year resident should be able to:

  1. Identify the pelvic anatomy specific to obstetrical and gynecological surgery.
  2. Identify the basic suture characteristics and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each type.
  3. List the names of the surgical instruments most commonly used in obstetrical and gynecological procedures.
  4. Identify the principal uses for the each surgical instrument.
  5. Demonstrate the proper surgical technique in the repair of a 4th degree rectal mucosa including:
    1. Selection of appropriate suture material
    2. Proper instrument and tissue handling
    3. Knot-tying
  6. Demonstrate the ability to repair of all layers of a simulated 3rd degree midline episiotomy using a model:
    1. Repair of the anal sphincter
    2. Reinforcement of the rectovaginal septum
    3. Repair of the vaginal mucosa
    4. Re-approximation of the perineal body
    5. Subcuticular closure of the perineum
  7. Describe the natural history of cervical dysplasia.
  8. Describe the indications for a LEEP.
  9. Recognize and name the equipment used during a LEEP.
  10. Demonstrate the technical aspects of performing a LEEP.
  11. Identify the anatomy of the abdominal wall specific to obstetrical and gynecological surgery.
  12. Recognize and name the types of abdominal wall incisions.
  13. Recognize and name the different wound closures.
  14. Identify the complications of abdominal wall surgery.
  15. Demonstrate the ability to close a simulated abdominal wall and skin using an animal model:
    1. Principles of wound closure
    2. Tissue handling
    3. Types of incisions
    4. Fascial closure technique
    5. Types of knots
  16. Collaborate effectively with colleagues and other health professionals in the surgical environment.
