Program Goal
This curriculum is a preparatory program for PGY1 residents to develop their knowledge of and skills in basic surgical procedures used in obstetrics and gynecology.
Objectives
At the completion of training, the first-year resident should be able to:
- Identify the pelvic anatomy specific to obstetrical and gynecological surgery.
- Identify the basic suture characteristics and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each type.
- List the names of the surgical instruments most commonly used in obstetrical and gynecological procedures.
- Identify the principal uses for the each surgical instrument.
- Demonstrate the proper surgical technique in the repair of a 4th degree rectal mucosa including:
- Selection of appropriate suture material
- Proper instrument and tissue handling
- Knot-tying
- Demonstrate the ability to repair of all layers of a simulated 3rd degree midline episiotomy using a model:
- Repair of the anal sphincter
- Reinforcement of the rectovaginal septum
- Repair of the vaginal mucosa
- Re-approximation of the perineal body
- Subcuticular closure of the perineum
- Describe the natural history of cervical dysplasia.
- Describe the indications for a LEEP.
- Recognize and name the equipment used during a LEEP.
- Demonstrate the technical aspects of performing a LEEP.
- Identify the anatomy of the abdominal wall specific to obstetrical and gynecological surgery.
- Recognize and name the types of abdominal wall incisions.
- Recognize and name the different wound closures.
- Identify the complications of abdominal wall surgery.
- Demonstrate the ability to close a simulated abdominal wall and skin using an animal model:
- Principles of wound closure
- Tissue handling
- Types of incisions
- Fascial closure technique
- Types of knots
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and other health professionals in the surgical environment.
