Research Interest: Identification of mechanisms for the increased susceptibility of infants to toxigenic E. coli diarrhea. His endogenous intestinal peptides guanylin and uroguanylin study has resulted in an understanding of their secretory, diuretic, and anti-nociceptive functions. His studies in part provided the basis for the development of pharmacologic agonists of the guanylin/uroguanylin receptor, e.g., linaclotide, now used to treat severe constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Clinical research relating to vaccines for diarrheal diseases; most recently concentrated on a double mutant of heat labile toxin (dmLT) which could be useful as part of a vaccine cocktail against enterotoxigenic E. coli infection as well as being a potential adjuvant for other enteric vaccines. Development of a human challenge model to test Cholera vaccine efficacy.
Clinical Interests: inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, diarrheal disease
