Candidates for Pump Use must be:

  • Motivated to improve blood glucose control
  • Cooperative and responsible
  • Able and willing to self-monitor blood glucose frequently... 6-8times/day
  • Proficient in carbohydrate counting
  • Able to coordinate blood glucose level with administration and adjustment of insulin
  • Able to understand risk factors for failure
  • Adequate financial resources
  • Realistic expectations


Criteria for Insulin Pump:

  • Three to six months of intensive therapy, including 3 or more shots per day, use of carbohydrate counting to calculate short acting insulin dosages for food and understanding of the use of Correction Factor to adjust blood glucose levels out of range
  • Monitoring and recording of blood sugars at least 4 times per day for 6 months
  • Baseline lab: C-Peptide, HgbA1C
  • Carbohydrate Counting ( Nutrition Consult)
  • Child / Teen, not just parents expressing desire for insulin pump
  •  Evidence of appropriate management by patient/family contacting diabetes team in emergency situations
  • Has completed Diabetes Education according to ADA Standards
  • Child / Teen already doing majority of diabetes self-care independently (although family remains involved in care)  
  • Ability to make small adjustments in treatment regimen appropriately between clinic visits
  • Ability to give abdominal injections
  • Ability to get/give upper buttock injections
  • No fear of needles
  • Wears Diabetes Medic Alert ID
