UAB 2Elizabeth Gunn, M.D., fellow in the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, was recently selected for the 2022 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Research Training Award for Fellows (RTAF).

The goal of the ASH award is to support trainees interested in pursuing academic careers in hematology. Dr. Gunn will receive over $70k in salary support.

According to Dr. Gunn, “My project focuses on investigating whether limited red cell phenotyping, to determine an individual's Duffy phenotype, can serve as a cost-effective screening tool in individuals with lower absolute neutrophil counts. My project also aims to remove the harmful term ‘benign ethnic neutropenia’ from practice as suggested by Drs. Merz and Achebe in their 2021 Blood Perspective.

Congratulations Dr. Gunn!
