Programs and Services:

The Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham was established more than 30 years ago. We are a consultation service. We currently provide ECT for our inpatients and currently established UAB outpatients.

At this time we are not accepting new outpatients for ECT at UAB, but we are pleased to offer them ECT through our partnership with Behavioral Health at St Vincent’s East. The St Vincent’s East ECT coordinator can be reached at (205)-838-6387.

Features:

ECT is commonly used in treatment of catatonia, severe depression, neuroleptic malignant syndrome and other psychiatric conditions based on their clinic presentation. Our team of healthcare professionals consists of attending psychiatrists, ECT nursing staff, anesthesiologists, certified nurse anesthetists, and office support staff.  ECT is conducted under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist and anesthesiologist, and we apply modern monitoring devices and anesthetic medications to provide safe and effective treatments.
