UAB general surgery research resident Raoud Marayati, M.D., won the Rosenkrantz Award for Basic Science Research at the American Academy of Pediatrics 2019 National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana, Oct. 25-29. The AAP national conference is the premier venue for pediatric health care professionals to collaborate and allows attendees to engage in interactive, hands-on workshops, as well as pediatric-related plenary sessions.

A researcher in the lab of UAB pediatric surgeon Elizabeth Beierle, M.D., Marayati presented her research during the AAP Section on Surgery portion of the conference, which provides programming on state-of-the-art techniques and information for pediatric surgeons relating to the surgical care of pediatric patients.

Marayati’s presentation highlighted some of the results of her work on a novel rexinoid developed at UAB for the treatment of neuroblastoma. In September, Marayati, received a travel award from the UAB Graduate Student Government to present her project, “Novel Retinoic Acid Derivative Induces Differentiation and Growth Arrest in Neuroblastoma,” at the American College of Surgeons 2019 Clinical Congress last month in San Francisco, California.
