Dr. Burke SmithPGY2 General Surgery Resident Burke Smith, M.D., has been awarded an American College of Surgeons (ACS) 2022-2024 Resident Research Scholarship award.

Smith one was of only six total residents selected for the scholarship, which is a two-year cycle. Other awardees included trainees from the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and Yale University, among others. UAB Surgery was represented last cycle (2020-2022) as well, by scholarship recipient and PGY3 General Surgery Research Resident Connie Shao, M.D.

The scholarship, offering $30,000 per year, supports Smith’s research and may be used for salary or stipend, research materials and travel related to his research. As a scholar, Smith will attend the 2022 ACS Clinical Congress to submit a report on the research as part of the Scientific Forum, and to receive a certificate at the annual meeting of the Scholarships Committee.

The ACS states that the six resident research scholarships are supported by the generosity of Fellows, Chapters and friends of the College, to encourage residents to pursue careers in academic surgery. Smith is delighted to represent the UAB General Surgery Residency program among those selected by the ACS for the scholarship.

“It is truly an honor to be one of only six trainees selected for this prestigious research award in academic surgery,” said Smith. “I look forward to representing the Department of Surgery through excellent research, dedication and innovation.”
