Dr. Haddon MullinsGeneral Surgery Resident PGY1 Haddon Mullins, M.D., alongside UAB Medicine Associate Dean of Clinical Education James Willig, M.D., was featured in a UAB MedCast podcast series about medical education.

In the introductory episode, “Introduction to Bedside Teaching,” Willig and Mullins discuss the definitions, barriers to, and advantages of bedside rounds. In addition, the episode provides tips for feedback and how to use bedside rounds to enhance the learning environment.

In “Patient Care Preparation,” the second episode, Willig and Mullins discuss how to establish expectations for learners and patients in the clinical teaching environment. The episode covers education hierarchy, establishing expectations, and the role of peer-to-peer education. Medical educators can prepare for rounding with students and get some strategies for on-the-go education.

The third installment of the series, “Clinical Encounter,” features Willig and Mullins discussing the topography of a bedside encounter and how to establish a patient-centered approach. The duo also highlights three published frameworks for bedside teaching and how to incorporate them into a clinical learning environment.

In the final episode of the series, Willig and Mullins are joined by UAB School of Medicine Associate Professor and Scientist Anne Zinski, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Caroline Harada, M.D. The group discusses how to effectively structure feedback, the differences between self-reflection and coaching, and how to provide feedback in difficult situations.
