The UAB School of Medicine (SOM) fourth-year medical students (MS4) have awarded Director of the General Surgery Residency Program Britney Corey, M.D., MACM, FACS, the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.

Each year, Medical Student Services ask students in the MS4 class to nominate one classmate and one faculty member for the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. The Tow award recognizes graduating students and faculty members who demonstrate “both clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of care and who show respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues.”

“I’m honored to be this year’s faculty recipient of the Tow Award,” said Corey. “Medical education as well as excellent patient care are two passions of mine–and pillars of UAB–so it is a true honor to be recognized for excellence in that area.”

Corey’s nominators spoke highly of her goals to make medical education a more compassionate field.

“Dr. Corey believes that compassion will improve the quality of surgical care, and she is a champion for this cause. Her efforts will certainly have a lasting impact on her trainees, the culture of the residency program, and the Department of Surgery at UAB as a whole,” said her nominators.

Nominators as spoke to her clinical expertise and wisdom when caring for patients.

“Dr. Corey provides patient-centered care by listening to what is important to her patients and providing options that will work with them,” said her nominators. “She validates patient concerns and fears about surgery, provides concise patient education, and works with patients to make an informed decision that is right for them.”

Corey will be honored with the Tow Award at the SOM commencement ceremony in person on May 22, and as faculty recipient, she will become a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
