The National institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Health Disparities Research Institute (HDRI) is scheduled for Aug. 9-13, 2021. Interested attendees must apply to attend the course, and according to the NIMHD, this was a particularly competitive year with a large number of applicants.

Selected attendees were chosen based on their potential in becoming a health disparities researcher and accomplishments to date. Due to the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 and in-person group meetings at NIH, the HDRI program will be delivered virtually this year.

The goal of the Health Disparities Research Institute is to provide participants with a broad overview of the leading issues facing minority health and health disparities research and stimulate discussion of proposed research projects. Activities will include lectures, seminars, interactive sessions, and small group discussions with leading scientists and NIH staff.

“I am honored to be selected to represent UAB Surgery at this national forum on health disparities,” said Chu. “My research has always been focused on identifying, understanding and eliminating health disparities in surgery, so I look forward to learning from fellow researchers, meeting NIH staff, and identifying ways that I can grow my research to be even more impactful.”
