Both graduates completed their programs at UAB in December 2021. Baker, who administratively supports the residency program, is delighted to have completed his degree.

“Working while going to school is not for the faint of heart, but I am so glad that I persevered,” said Baker. “I am grateful to support a program that supports me back and encourages me to achieve my goals.”

General Surgery Residency Program Director Britney Corey, M.D., MACM, FACS, is proud of the work of both Baker and Smithson.

“It is no surprise that both Mario and Dr. Smithson succeeded in their programs," said Corey. "I look forward to all that they will accomplish with their additional learning experience.”

The UAB General Surgery Residency Program is known for supporting its trainees to reach higher. In fact, four current residents have their Ph.D., while a fifth is pursuing theirs. Additionally, 10 current residents, including Smithson, have completed a masters degree–from a Master’s in Public Health to a Master’s in Science.
