LC story photoMany General Surgery Residents were elected for the honor of being mentors within the UAB School of Medicine (SOM) Housestaff Learning Community (LC).

The LC is designed to cultivate a community within a smaller group setting for UAB SOM medical students. Its monthly meetings provide an inclusive and safe space to discuss topics such as medical ethics, wellness, and professional identity formation, and marvelous opportunities to learn from other’s perspective to become well-rounded physicians.

A large part of the LC program is engaging in the Birmingham community. Not only are informal gatherings an incredible venue to get to know other medical students, but members of LCs are also encouraged to pursue service, such as volunteering for foodbanks.

Each LC group has a mentor, and this year, seven General Surgery Residents were selected.

  • Hannah Ficarino, M.D.
  • Adam Lucy, M.D.
  • Burke Smith, M.D.
  • Macie Enman, M.D.
  • Ahmer Irfam, M.D.
  • Janet Julson, M.D.
  • Madhushree Zope, M.D.

"This is an amazing opportunity to mentor students from every stage of medical school,” Lucy said. “The chance to join the same learning community I was in as a UAB medical student is an added bonus to continue the Hill legacy and give back to the school that launched me to a successful resident career."
