new faculty 2The UAB Department of Surgery is happy to announce three new faculty who joined the department in September: Andrea Gillis, M.D., Marcos E. Pozo Jatem, M.D., and Kristen Wong, M.D..

Dr. Gillis joins the department as an assistant professor for the Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery. She is a board-certified surgeon and the co-director of the Pre-College Research Internship for Students from Minority Backgrounds (PRISM). Her areas of interest are breast and endocrine surgery along with surgical oncology. Dr. Gillis received her medical degree from Columbia University, completed her residency at Albany Medical Center in New York and most recently, an endocrine surgery fellowship at UAB.

Dr. Pozo Jatem joins the department as an assistant professor for the Division of Transplantation. He specializes in abdominal transplant surgery and pediatric transplant and hepatobiliary surgery. Dr. Pozo Jatem received his medical degree at the Universidad de los Andes Medical in Bogotá, Colombia. Following, he was a general surgery resident at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and later completed two fellowships in abdominal transplant surgery and clinical bioethics at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine both located in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Wong joins the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery faculty as an assistant professor. Her clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery. She received her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed a general surgery residency at the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. Her fellowship training includes a Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.
