UAB Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy Assistant Professor Danielle Sutzko, M.D., M.S., FACS, recently addressed how physicians can prepare to tackle their student loan debt on the Association for Academic Surgery's blog.

Sutzko notes the importance of a proactive approach to tackling student debt. She suggests reviewing the details of the public service loan forgiveness program and beginning payments as quickly as possible.

She reminds resident physicians that every payment during residency/fellowship means one less payment made as an attending physician at the standard payment level, when they no longer qualify for financial hardship.

Sutzko encourages physicians to create an individualized financial plan that works for them. "At the end of the day, no one is going to care more about your money or your financial future than you," notes Sutzko in her post.
