Bayley Alexandra Jones, M.D.Dr. Bayley Jones, a UAB Department of Surgery research resident, was selected as a recipient of the 2023-2024 Association for Academic Surgery/Association for Academic Surgery Foundation Trainee Clinical Outcomes/Health Services Trainee Research Award.

Dr. Jones received the award for her proposal Adapting Enhanced Recovery Programs for Low Health Literacy Patients. As a member of the Chu Lab, Dr. Jones’ work focuses on identifying, understanding, and reducing disparities in surgery.

"It is truly an honor to be selected by the committee to receive this award. I am very grateful for the support and guidance of my mentor, Dr. Chu, and I am looking forward to continuing our research to reduce surgical disparities and improve care for surgical patients," says Dr. Jones.

The AAS/AASF Trainee Clinical Outcomes/Health Services Trainee Research Award is a one-year grant of $30,000 at the commencement of Dr. Jones's research project term.

As an award recipient, she is invited to present a brief oral summary of her sponsored research at the Annual Academic Congress in 2025.

Dr. Jones is a general surgery resident at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she completed three years of clinical training prior to beginning her research with the Department of Surgery at UAB. She is a Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine alumna.
