The UAB Department of Surgery was well-represented at the 11th Annual Academic Surgical Congress, sponsored by the Association for Academic Surgeons and the Society of University Surgeons, held in Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, 2016. 

Selwyn Vickers, M.D., senior vice president and dean of the School of Medicine, participated in the SUS Presidential Session “The Evolution of Academic Surgery: What Will the Future Hold?”, speaking about the future of surgical leadership. Herbert Chen, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Surgery, presented at the session “You Are What You Wear? How to Project Your Best Self”. 

Jayleen Grams, M.D., and Jayme Locke, M.D., served as session moderators. Renata Sztul, Ph.D., and Haining Jin, Ph.D., gave podium presentations. 

There was also a significant showing from our trainees, as all of the following made podium presentations:

  • Medical Students: Fenil Patel, Lauren Theiss
  • Residents: Evan Garner, M.D.; Bob Hollis, M.D.; Caroline Jones, M.D.; Laura Stafman, M.D.; Tyler Wahl, M.D. 
  • Fellow: Ilan Maizlin, M.D.

The following faculty presented research:

  • Pediatrics: Elizabeth Beierle, M.D.; Mike Chen, M.D.; Colin Martin, M.D.; Rob Russell, M.D. 
  • GI: Daniel Chu, M.D.; Jayleen Grams, M.D.; Melanie Morris, M.D.
  • Surgical Oncology: Herbert Chen, M.D.
  • Trauma: Donald Reiff, M.D.

Other UAB representatives included Kirby I. Bland, M.D.; Patrick Bosarge, M.D.; John Christein, M.D.; Jeff Kerby, M.D.; and Thomas Wang, M.D. Additional participants included Courtney Balentine, M.D.; Greg Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D.; and Tim King, M.D., Ph.D., who are all recent recruits and will soon the Department.
