The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery’s Britney Corey, M.D., was recently named the new director of the Department of Surgery’s medical student clerkship.

Former director Richard Stahl, M.D., will now serve as assistant director, while Robert Dabal, M.D., will take on the role of fourth-year clerkships director.

The surgery clerkship is an eight-week rotation during medical students’ third year of medical school. Students spend four weeks on the general surgery service, two weeks on a specialty service and two weeks on a sub-specialty service.

"The surgery clerkship is an important part of the third-year medical student experience,” Corey said. “Every year, a significant number of students choose to pursue a surgical specialty, while others will always relate their surgery clerkship experiences to every patient they encounter who needs a surgeon's expertise. I am excited to be a part of that experience for our students."

Corey has been working with the clerkship in some capacity for a number of years.

“Dr. Corey is advancing from her role as ‘teacher,’ to her calling as an ‘educator,’” Stahl said. “Imparting knowledge is the purview of a teacher. It is immensely important, and Dr. Corey has shown great expertise here. But developing better ways to teach and inspire students through curricular development and improving our methods of assessment requires a special skill set that she brings to the job. I am extremely proud to see her advance into this position.”
