New degree programs offer more options for Blazers

The new degree programs provide students with even more options to learn from world-renowned faculty and researchers.

"We are proud to introduce a range of new and dynamic degree programs to UAB in 2024," said Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Pam Benoit, Ph.D. “These programs reflect our commitment to academic excellence and providing innovative, top-tier education for our students to learn, grow, and be successful in an ever-evolving world.”

Writing and Media

The Bachelor of Arts degree in writing and media combines two of the College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of English existing concentrations — Professional Writing and Creative Writing — along with a variety of creative electives from other departments (Art, History, Theatre, etc.) to allow students to customize the program to their interests. Not only will students have the opportunity to develop media writing skills in professional, technical and creative styles, but they will receive training in industry-standard publishing technologies through Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign and Photoshop. Students will benefit from internship opportunities that place students in Birmingham-based organizations to earn valuable work experience before graduation.

Disability Studies and Rehab Science

Students planning for a career in physical or occupational therapy, public health, and rehabilitation research will be provided with a foundational understanding of disability inclusion science, as well as prevention, health promotion and wellness tactics integrated across the entire curriculum with the B.S. degree in disability studies and rehabilitation science in the UAB School of Health Professions. Students can learn from a spectrum of courses, like Rehabilitation and Health Care in the United States, Environmental and Community Considerations of Mobility, Tests and Measures in Rehabilitation Science, and Living with Disability. Students will also benefit from research opportunities, engaging seminars and esteemed faculty from renowned centers across UAB such as the Center for Engagement in Disability Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the Center for Exercise Medicine, and more. Students can become advocates for individuals with disabilities and chronic conditions and empower them to lead healthier lifestyles.

Master of Science in Health Care Innovation

Offered through the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, the M.S. degree in health care innovation can help prepare students for success in the rapidly evolving landscape of innovative medicine. Choose from a general plan of study or specialized degree with one of the offered concentrations: AI in Medicine and Digital Health. Learn key skills in data analysis and problem-solving, discuss the ethics within digital health, discover new technologies, and receive real-world experience through a group research project. Students will even have the opportunity to maintain an “entrepreneurial portfolio” of innovation-related projects and experiences, such as business models, consulting engagements, innovation audits and other experiential learning accomplishments.

New Concentrations in M.S. in Physics

To prepare students for these fields, UAB has developed a program that is advanced, fast-paced and research-focused. In fact, the curriculum will allow students to explore the same research areas as UAB Ph.D. students. In addition to the curriculum, students can choose one of two plans. Plan I (thesis option) requires a thesis based on original research. Students can research in an interdisciplinary area such as biophysics, chemical physics, geophysics, mathematical physics, neurophysics, optics, materials science or engineering physics. Students still mulling over a Ph.D. or M.D. can choose Plan II (non-thesis).

New Graduate Certificates

Three new graduate certificates are available, including Cyber Security Analytics in the College of Arts and Sciences, Disability Studies in the UAB School of Public Health, and Multi-Tiered Approach to Trauma in the School of Health Professions.

New Names, Same Impactful Degrees 

Two degree programs have been renamed to better reflect the offerings for UAB students.

The Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering is now the Bachelor of Science in electrical and computer engineering.

The M.S. in clinical laboratory science is now the M.S. in medical laboratory science.
