Additional faculty members are elected through a process overseen by the Faculty Senate. Judd and Chapman agree to serve as co-chairs.

The Signature Core Curriculum Committee hosts a kick-off open lecture on the importance of general education: “UAB’s Signature Core and Today’s Learning Landscape: National Trends and Best Practices in General Education,” delivered by Dr. Kate McConnell, Senior Director for Research and Assessment, Association of American Colleges and Universities. Dr. McConnell also leads a two-day planning retreat for the committee.

Co-chairs and members of the Signature Core Team hold listening meetings with stakeholders across campus to raise awareness for meeting student needs, to encourage creative thinking, and to gather a wide variety of big ideas for making UAB’s core unique among peer institutions. These meetings are organized with the help from the Signature Core Liaisons. The committee administers a survey to all UAB faculty, students, and staff, inviting them to identify the most important learning outcomes for the core curriculum.

Develop an Action Plan for the Signature Core

Using both survey results and comments collected at presentations and listening sessions, the Signature Core Curriculum Committee develops an Action Plan that sets out the broad principles and learning outcomes that should define UAB’s general education curriculum and describes approaches to curricular change. In spring 2019, the Action Plan is presented to departmental liaisons and to the Faculty Senate Curriculum Committee. A copy is also sent to all UAB faculty who are invited to submit thoughts and comments.

Create a Rough Draft of a New Curriculum

During summer 2019, the Signature Core Curriculum rolled up its sleeves and started drafting a new curriculum. This was accomplished in part at a two-day retreat in May and in part at the Institute for General Education and Assessment in June, followed by multiple meetings and focus groups and informal ‘test driving’ conversations over the course of the summer.

In Spring 2020, the plan for the Signature Core Curriculum is approved by the Curriculum Committee and then presented to the full Faculty Senate. Following the Senate endorsement, the curriculum is approved by the Provost and President, and then presented as an information item to the University of Alabama Board of Trustees.

A faculty Core Director will be hired to oversee the implementation of the Core Curriculum.

Working in concert with faculty task forces and the Faculty Senate, the Core Director will steer the process of populating the new curriculum with new and existing courses, fine-tuning transfer pathways, resolving issues, and communicating changes.

Continued initiatives including the Core Fellows program will foster a culture of teaching excellence in core classes. These initiatives will be funded by a grant from the Strategic Investment Fund.

The core will not be fully implemented until it has been entered into the Undergraduate Catalog, perhaps in fall 2021 although a more likely target, in view of COVID-related delays, is fall 2022.
