The Strategic Planning Council includes a signature core curriculum in the Mission Pillar on Education.

Strategic Objective 3: Create a signature core curriculum focused on modeling and developing socially conscious global citizens and leaders.

  • Activity 1: Identify competencies that are critical for a core curriculum that addresses 21st century needs (e.g., critical thinking, global perspectives, leadership, communication).
  • Activity 2: Strengthen and renew the core curriculum to provide a coherent, intellectually stimulating and transformative education.
  • Activity 3: Model successful engagement opportunities by students, faculty and staff around issues related to social consciousness, global citizenship and leadership.

Choose Leaders for the Signature Core Team

Provost Benoit appoints three co-chairs to lead the Signature Core Team. Dr. Alison Chapman is Professor and Chair of the English Department in the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Susan Spezzini is Professor and Program Director of Secondary Education in the School of Education and, as Faculty Senator, chairs UAB’s Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. Dr. Suzanne Judd is Associate Professor of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health. The Signature Core’s executive team drafts an initial action plan.

Identify and Invite Members to Serve on Core Team

A group led by Provost Benoit identifies and invites 16 members to serve on the Signature Core Team. Two additional members are elected through a process overseen by the Faculty Senate. Every school that teaches undergraduates has at least one voting member on the Core Team. Other voting members include a student, parent, community member, and Student Affairs staff member. There are also three non-voting ex-officio members.

Hold Kick-off Workshop with Core Team Members

The Signature Core Team holds its inaugural meeting on May 3, 2018 with a workshop led by Dr. Kate McConnell, Senior Director for Research and Assessment, Association of American Colleges and Universities. Dr. McConnell also delivers a campus-wide keynote entitled “UAB’s Signature Core and Today’s Learning Landscape: National Trends and Best Practices in General Education.”

Members of the Signature Core Team read about general education research and learn about curriculum reform initiatives. Deans select one liaison from each department to support actions led by the Core Team. UAB staff create a website and promotional materials. Co-chairs and members of the Signature Core Team hold listening meetings with stakeholders across campus to raise awareness for meeting student needs, to encourage creative thinking, and to gather a wide variety of big ideas for making UAB’s core unique among peer institutions. These meetings are organized with the help from the Signature Core Liaisons.

Members of the Signature Core Team examine input from across campus and identify curricular “must haves. Using suggestions from the UAB community, committee members discuss ideas for making UAB’s signature core curriculum unique among peer institutions. The conceptualization of a plan starts to emerge.

Working groups fine-tune their drafts, combine them into a whole curriculum, and develop an action plan to advance the Signature Core from operationalizing to institutionalizing.
