Mechanisms of Hypertension and Cardiovascular Diseases
T32 Training Program
Hosting: Information Session
Description: The T32 Postdoctoral Training Program entitled Mechanisms of Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease has enabled trainees to successfully generate novel basic, translational, clinical and population concepts and data, which have driven innovative strategies to prevent and manage hypertension (HTN) and related cardiovascular disease (CVD). Recent Program augmentations include: 1) partnership with University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers (UWIRCs) to ensure trainee exposure to all of Life's Essential behavioral factors that impact CV health; 2) expansion of Interactive Mentoring and Training Modules (Culturally-Relevant Mentoring, RISE Leadership Programs, Grant/Manuscript Writing, Career Enhancement Workshops, Mental Health & Wellness); and, 3) multidisciplinary training exposures via Mini Rotations (trainees learn techniques and concepts not available in primary Mentor(s) lab). Partnerships with various UWIRCs facilitate interdisciplinary research, educational ingenuity and provide substantial resources. This Program offers a spectrum of training in the following Thematic Focus Areas: Basic Science (training in fundamental mechanisms, including those secondary to HTN-induced end-organ injury); Translational Science (translation-to-humans, testing basic science discoveries for clinical applicability); Clinical Science (research to improve knowledge and implementation of new therapies); Population Science (large-scale community cohort studies). Trainees will spend 2-3 years in investigation, coursework, presentation/publication of research and career enhancement. Importantly, this is the only postdoctoral training program in Alabama, a state with a high burden of HTN and related CVD. Our overall goal is to address a shortage of scientists trained to use cutting edge approaches to problems related to hypertension and cardiovascular disease, which are leading causes of death and disability in the US.
Applicants must be either a U. S. citizen or permanent resident.

Fun Fact: The Program Director of this T32 loves to cook! Cooking is like doing an experiment in the lab, requiring the correct balance of creativity and methodical thinking :)
